Getting Ready for Spring/Summer Outdoor Fun


It's been a long winter for some of us in northern climates, but it looks like it's finally spring and time to get ready for outdoor activities.

Pipe Cleaner Butterflies

My son got a butterfly garden for his birthday, and we loved watching the caterpillars eat, form a chrysalis and turn into beautiful butterflies.  Here's an easy craft to do with the kids when it's raining or if it's too hot!  Make it a learning craft by reading Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar or Deborah Heiligman's From Caterpillar to Butterfly (both available onamazon.com).

You'll Need:
Construction Paper or colored card stock
Pipe cleaners
Markers, crayons or anything else you want to use ...

Sunday Crepes


I don't know how it started but my tradition is to make crepes on Sunday. The recipe below is very forgiving-- you can leave stuff out or change ingredients, and it still works. 


Ingredients:
  • 1-1/2 cups whole milk (I rarely have whole milk and have used almond milk, skim milk, and combinations of whatever is in the house)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3 Tablespoons sugar (I've used Stevia, only used 2 Tablespoons, again...forgiving)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Scant 5 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted. 
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ...

Saturday, May 18 - American Redcross Babysitter Training

This training will provide information and skills necessary to provide safe and responsible care for children in the absence of parents and guardians. Participants will develop skills in leadership, professionalism, basic care, safety and first aid. Course includes a Babysitter Training Handbook, an Emergency Reference Guide and a CD with fun activities and support resources. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Red Cross Babysitter Training Certification card. Please bring a sack lunch.

Wednesday, May 22 - "Take Me Fishing” Trailers-Free Fishing Event

Learn the basics of fishing at this free event sponsored by Idaho Fish and Game. The Take Me Fishing trailers are stocked with equipment and information, so the only thing kids and their parents have to do is show up. Getting kids excited about fishing will build a new generation of anglers. Idaho Fish and Game's "Take Me Fishing" trailers travel to local ponds all across the state. *Participants will be granted a permit to fish without a license. The fishing equipment can be checked out for free during the scheduled times listed for your area. Reservations are not needed and equipment is checked out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Thursday, May 23 - Kids Book & Movie Club

The Kids' Club is open to any youth who is interested in talking about the book of the month they have read and who would enjoy viewing a movie related to the book. We will meet once a month, every 4th Thursday. One month we will discuss the book; the next month we will watch the movie related to that book. Snacks, trivia contest & prizes available at each movie

Bring your kids to The Home Depot for a free kids "How To Workshop". The workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while at the same time helping to instill a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, this fun time allows for quality one-on-one time between adults and children. In addition to the newly constructed project kit, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron, similar to The Home Depot associates aprons, and an achievement pin. The hands-on sessions are offered on the first Saturday of each month at all Home Depot Stores.

Nampa Recreation Department is bringing “fun” to your community park all summer long. Saturday, June 8 - Free Fishing Day

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game invites anglers of all ages, residents and non residents to celebrate the day by fishing anywhere in Idaho without a license. Though fishing license requirements are suspended for this special day, all other rules, such as limits or tackle restrictions, remain in effect. At special locations around the southwest region, equipment will be available for use and fishing experts will be on hand to help novice anglers learn the ins and outs of fishing. In addition all these locations will be stocked with hatchery rainbow trout prior to the special day. Look for the event nearest you on Idaho Fish and Game website.
